I don’t know about you, but my quarantine reading really tanked during March and April. My mental health struggled greatly. I was stuck at home all of the time, and I couldn’t focus on anything. I am sure all of my other #type1s and extroverted introverts felt the same. You’ve heard others talk about it already, so I won’t dwell.
Here’s a list of the books that DID pop out to me during quarantine.
Oona Out Of Order by Margarita Montimore
What a trip! Oona is someone who time jumps to different years in her life starting at age 18 and jumping ahead to age 40+. A time travel, year jumping in life premise that was done very well. I was confused at first, and a big frustrated with Oona’s choices. The story quickly turned around as I become engrossed in her life. This book encompassed all the emotions of being a teenager with all of the life lessons of not knowing what will come next (motto: live in the moment). I didn’t want it to end!
Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn
My pen-obsessed type 1 heart loved this book. A hand letterer falls in love in NYC with a wall street math man who hates the city, and she wants to change his mind. They travel all over the city together and of course they fall in love. I was able to get lost in this story and pretend that I was Meg for a few hours.
The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal
This is branded as ‘science fiction’ but is closer to alternate historical fiction based in science. Rockets and the moon come along at a different time after a natural disaster strikes the earth. The main character is complex and hard working and intelligent. She is attempting to be come the first woman astronaut and her fight for women’s rights was portrayed elegantly. Recommend to anyone who enjoyed the book or movie ‘Hidden Figures’ and wanted to see it play out in a more narrative way.
Heartstopper Vol. 1-3 by Alice Oseman
A graphic novel set in a European boarding school where two boys on the lacrosse team find themselves unexpectedly falling for each other. All of the teen romance and heart throbs for the two of them. My heart exploded with love over and over again. And the people in their lives who support their decisions made me believe in a better world.
